FAQs
Whatever your question, we hope we can give you an answer. In this section we answer the most frequently asked questions.
Can Solar Energy Make a Difference?
Renewable sources such as wind and solar now account for 12% of global electricity production. This year is expected to mark a turning point where the use of fossil fuels to generate electricity will drop for the first time in history outside of a pandemic or global recession, indicating a shift towards eco-friendly energy.

How Do You Determine If My Land is Suitable for Solar Development?
We conduct an initial review of the land to establish its suitability based on various elements, such as landscape and visual impact on the surroundings, flood risk, potential shading and heritage. If you think your land is suitable and would like us to investigate for any opportunity, please contact our development team at development@furlong.energy.
What are the Risks for Landowners?
Landowners face minimal financial risks with our land rental agreement, bound by a contractual lease. Since solar projects ensure predictable energy generation and low operational risks, the risks are very low for landowners.
How Long Will I Need to Lease My Land?
Our standard lease term is 40 years, which corresponds to the average lifespan of PV panels. We typically offer options to extend the lease for another five years, subject to a new planning application, at the discretion of the landowner.
Do I Need to Worry About Planning Requirements?
All ground-based solar installations require planning consent and we manage the entire process, in collaboration with you.
Will a Solar Farm Affect Land Classification?
Solar farms serve as a temporary farm diversification strategy and do not change land classification.
Does Solar Energy Work Well in the UK?
Absolutely. Solar panels produce energy all year round in the UK, not requiring direct sunlight.
Are Solar Farms Environmentally Friendly?
Solar farms promote biodiversity and support new and existing plant and animal life. Our team researches the site to determine wildlife present and tailors proposals to support the local environment. Each development creates new habitats, boosting net biodiversity gains.
Why Are Solar Farms Usually Built on Agricultural Land?
The Net Zero Target set by the government cannot be achieved through rooftop and brownfield solar installations alone. Domestic and industrial buildings are not always viable solutions due to unsuitable rooftops, lack of required infrastructure or high initial costs. Agricultural land is generally utilised where it presents moderate to low quality land without disrupting food security concerns.

What is a Green Power Purchase Agreement?
A Green Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a long-term contract for the purchase of electricity produced by a renewable energy generator. Green PPAs are used by businesses like yours to secure a reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable source of electricity for their operations. By signing a Green PPA, corporations can meet their sustainability goals, reduce their carbon footprint, and hedge against volatile energy prices.
What is the typical duration of a Green Power Purchase Agreement?
Most Power Purchase Agreement will last between 10 and 20 years. However, the duration can vary depending on the specific terms and conditions agreed upon by the parties involved in the agreement.
Do we need to contribute towards the capital expenses involved in building the solar installation?
No, the cost of building the system is it entirely met by Furlong Energy.
Will I still be connected to the grid?
Yes, you will still be connected to the grid even with a Power Purchase Agreement in place. The private wire is simply an alternative option for sourcing energy, but it does not replace the grid.
Can I switch to green electricity before my current energy contract expires?
Yes, in most cases, you can start using green electricity while still under your existing contract.
We cannot install solar panels on our rooftop. Is there another solution?
Yes, absolutely. Alternative solutions to a rooftop system include solar car ports installed on your company’s car park or a dedicated solar farm. The latter will be built within 2 km of your site and your electricity will be supplied by a directly connected cable.
